Data migration in Tally

Data migration from one system or version to another happens in cases where a company is
trying to either keep up with the compliance standard changes or if the newer version has some
features that are reducing the time taken to complete the activities which were taking
comparatively longer on the older version or system.
Migration in Tally, however, is a lot simpler and easier to do. With a few clicks here, a few clicks
there and your data is migrated from one version of tally to another, all in a matter of minutes.
The process is extremely simplified and requires a minimal amount of human interaction.
Process

The process overview is something like:

● A Tally Migration tool named “tally72migration.exe” is required which can be downloaded
from Tally’s website and needs to be saved in the Tally’s installation folder.
● When the migration tool is run, it opens Tally along with it and shows a message that
Tally is “Ready for Migration” in the Migration Messages panel.
● You now need to select “Migrate Data” and specify the data path.
● Select the company for which you want to migrate the data and its data will be loaded.
● In case you are asked to conform to “Rewrite Version”, you need to provide a positive
response, in this case, Yes. In other cases you would be asked to back up the data
before Rewriting, to which you need to agree, select the companies that need to be
backed up and provide a destination path to where the backup will be created. Once the
backup is completed, the Rewrite begins.
● If the company has a Payroll module enabled, then there are some additional
post-migration steps that need to be taken care of.
● Now you just have to follow the on-screen instructions like confirming to “Continue
Migration” and proceed with it.
● Now you will see a list of Masters and Vouchers that are ready to be migrated on the
Migration Information Screen.
● The migration status can be tracked from the screen on the right while the screen on the
left being the one for the older version.
● When the migration is complete, a message is shown confirming the completion of migration
and on pressing any key, you’ll be greeted with a Congratulation screen. For recent
versions, Migration of Excise, TDS and VAT entries also takes place.
● The migrated companies are saved in the older version data and the migrated data is
saved in a folder with the name prefixed with zeroes comprising of five digits
After Payroll migration, you would need to reconfigure the migrated “Pay Heads” to match the
ones on the older version. After migration, the new Pay Heads are changed to “As User Defined
Value”.

Conclusion:

If you’ve been using an older version of Tally for a long time and have been
skeptical about migrating to a newer version, you can rest assured that the migration will not be
painfully long and confusing, rather it is very simple and easy to understand the process and the
good thing is, that there is rarely any need to have the highly technical know-how of things to do it.
